for alphas, you can always add more string in pretty easily as the back will already shor where you add strings, but if you really want an exact amount, i would make a little sample bracelet first:Make an alpha that is 10 strings wide, and with string "k" do a couple of rows. then at the beginning of a row measure how long "k" is. do one full row. measure the string one more time. subtract the shorter length from the starting length and that is how much string you used for 10 knots. for example: starting with a length of 20cm, doing one row of 10 knots, then measuring again and having 10cm of string "k" left, you can assume you use about 10cm per 10 knots, or about 1cm of string per knot. this way you can count how many rows you will have to do in the final pattern and multiply 1cm per knot per row. for an alpha that is 15 strings wide, and 40 rows, I would multiply 15x40 to get 600cm of string needed for just the (background)knots in the pattern plus a little wiggle room sisnce you will not be using it for every knot, then add maybe 10-15cm extra to use at the end as ties. of course how tightly you knot will change this number so i would reccomend making your own sample to measure. Hope this makes sense! |

I wouldn't even cut string. Just use the skein or package the thread came in. Then, after you finish with that string, you can cut it. Masha Knots has a youtube tutorial on how to make alphas that would explain this a little bit better.
