Approx 1metre/40 inches. Although it ultimately depends on how long you want your finished bracelet, the amount the colour is used, the ties ect. You will work out how long you need your strings to be as you progress

I typically hold one end in one hand and pull the string up my arm and to my opposite shoulder, and that’s the length of one string

You should look at the pattern and try to see if there is a color that will be used more than the rest. If so, make that one a bit longer and the others don’t need to be quite as long, though a wingspan is usually a safe length for bracelets of a medium thickness.

For normal bracelets I do my wingspan (from one hand across my body to the other) this is about 56-57 in. and if I'm doing a loop, I'll add six in. on that color string. This will also very on the size of your bracelet, so the thicker the pattern, I add a little more string to that 56-57 in. For alpha's, I don't typically cut the background color, as it takes a lot of string and I don't want to add in more, for smaller color sections I cut half a wingspan to a full wingspan it really just depends. I always cut more string than I might need for normal patterns, just incase I run out, but for alphas they are much more forgiving so if you do run out you can always add in more. But I would say a good place to start would be your wingspan. 56-57 in. typically makes a 5-6 in bracelet as long as the pattern doesn't go wider than 12-15 strings. Hope this helped!
