A alpha bracelet is when you add strings to the bracelet. Normal patterns are when you don’t add strings. Sorry this is complicated but I recommended watching Masha knots beginner guide YouTube video.

Alpha bracelets are knotted row by row. You have strings on which you knot, the base strings, and a string with which you knot, the leading string. To make a knot of a different colour you switch to a new leading string and continue knotting with that string. In normal patterns you knot more in diagonals. You knot with all your strings. You don't add new strings to change colours. It only depends on which knots you do. |

Normal patterns are made with knots from the existing strings, but with alphas the knots are added onto an existing base string with a separate piece of thread. You’ll also notice that alphas are more squared and line up with each other, and normal bracelets have more of a diamond look to them, and connect diagonally.
