Hi! Do you mean the arrows on the patterns? If so this may help!

Forwards knot (forwards knot followed by forwards knot)..... Make a "4" with the top string twice

Backwards knot (backwards knot followed by backwards knot).... Make backwards "4" with the top string twice

Forwards-Backwards knot (forwards knot followed by backwards knot).... Make a "4" with the top string once, then a backwards "4" with the top string once

Backwards-Forwards knot (backwards knot followed by forwards knot).... Make a backwards "4" with the top string once, then a "4" with the top string once

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help! -Meghan

Put the strings in the order you see at the beginning of the pattern
Lay the strings in groups of two
Do the knots of the first row. Knots are always made with two strings.
When you have made all knots in row 1 again put the strings in groups of two and do the knots between the two strings in each group

There are 4 different types of knots:
The arrow to the right is the forwards knot. You take the string on the left and knot it over the string on the right twice.
The arrow to the left is the backwards knot. You take the string on the right and knot it over the string on the left twice.
The arrow that goes to the right and then to the left is the forward backward knot. And the arrow to the left and then to the right is backwards forwards knot. They're basically one half of the forward and one half of the backwards knot. The halves are made in the order they appear in the name of the knot.

If you’re more of a visual learner you can go on YouTube and there are some videos on how to read patterns
