Hi, so I made my very first alpha and I was very excited and I watched masha knots tutorial on flat alphas and followed it exactly! But when I finished the bracelet, it’s not flat it’s like wavy and it just doesn’t look good also there is some string sticking out on the side that you can see. I’m kind of upset bc I was looking forward and I thought it was gonna be rlly easy cause I was looking at pictures of other people’s alphas and they looked so good LOL! Anyways, does anyone have any tips?

It’s possible that you used different brand of strings for the different colors, causing certain knots to be larger and making the bracelet wonky. I also recommend using the alpha straight edge technique and Masha Knots has a video on that. Did you cut your strings close enough when you were done with the color on the back?

My advice is for you to regularly check the progress you've made. It almost sounded like you made the bracelet without really paying attention and then you were surprised it didn't turn out how you expected. If you realise a knot is wonky or that your bracelet is somehow turning wonky fix it right away. Most issues won't suddenly disappear after you added some more rows.

The flat alpha technique isn't perfect for everyone. I've tried it in the past and for me it's a lot easier to work with the regular alpha technique. So you might want to try that too just to be able to compare what works best for you.

In general to keep alphas straight you need to make sure that the loose strings in the back are relatively loose. If they're too tight they pull on the bracelet and it curves.

Ok thank you! I honestly thought it was turning out fine but like you said I kept thinking that doing more rows would fix it! Also the thing about the strings sticking out on the sides I’m gonna try and explain that more. So when I would have to switch the leading string on the second to last knot on a row and then switch it again on the last knot of the row the color that I used for the second to last knot sticks out on the side no matter how I tuck it under. Hopefully I explained that well! I just submitted a picture of the alpha that I made so maybe seeing it will help you get a better visual

Some advice is make sure that your string is the same thickness or else your knots will become uneven. Try making your knots consistent because it can still cause to be uneven. Last, I suggest using the straight alpha technique. Let me know if you need help still! Im happy to help! ❤️

@chloe_27 ok thank you! I may be tying knots to tight in some places so I think I will try to knot looser

also if there is thread sticking out the edge, and you are using the flat alpha technique i would add a extra string at the end.

@rkade are you supposed to add an extra string for the straight alpha technique?

I’m pretty sure that if you use the flat alpha technique on the very last knot of a row, there will be the wrong color poking out no matter what. So I like to either make the border wider (so that the color switch is on the second to last knot of the row instead of the last knot) or just not use the flat alpha technique for that particular color switch

@madeleine_ Thank you that’s a good idea! I think I figured it out bc I just realized in Masha Knots vid on alphas she says something about this exact thing and I didn’t even realize haha

Try not to get frustrated if they don’t turn out perfect. The more you make the better they will get. Sometimes I just tie my knots too tight when I’m switching strings and the edges are wonky. My advice is to have patience and keep trying

@bellar017 haha yes this definitely lifted my mood and I will definitely keep trying thank you! And yes I am definitely gonna try and not tie my knots as tight!

When you have to switch strings right next to the last knot, don't do a color switch, just put the last leading string below your alpha base string.

There are multiple things you should do, but make sure all your strings are the same brand, or else the knots will be different sizes. Also try to tie all your knots with the same force for the same reason. Also, you can cut the strings super close to the bracelet after you tie them in and they won't come out!
