I want start making alphas and I watched masha knots video on it but still have a few questions.

1. How long do I make the string?
2. Does it matter what type of string that I use for the base string? (Like can I use a different brand of string for the base strings?)
3. What is the best way to start them? (Like a loop, a tie...?)

Thanks!

For the first question, it needs to be long enough for the ties and then the bracelet, I personally leave 30cm for the ties ( each side) and 15cm for the bracelet , it doesn’t matter in the bass strings are different as long as they are all the same or from the same brand ans finally I personally like triangle start and I do an adjustable knots ☺️ I hope it helps

For base strings, I would say measure from your fingertips to the middle of you chest so that gives you enough length for ties or loops. The base string can be a different thickness from the thread used to make the patters but the threads making the pattern must be the same thickness(or brand) or else the bracelet will come out looking a wonky. I say when you first start an alpha, do ties, the loops are made using a macrame technique I believe.

Hello! So like others said, your going to need some length for the ties and then add however long you want the actual pattern to be. Since no one answered the other questions, I will. So for the second question, yes it does NOT matter how thick or thin the base strings are. I usually use crochet thread that is thinner than normal embroidery floss, and it works great. Just remember that all the knotting strings should be the same width. As for the last question, it's all personal preference. I like to make my alphas with triangle ends and twisted ties but it really doesn't matter. Also @knotartt does a different technique and I like that method too. I also like to make them into keyrings sometimes, so I just don't have any start. Hope this helps!😊

It doesn’t matter if the base strings are different thickness, but it matters is the strings your knotting with are different thickness. honestly, the best way to start them is how you feel the easiest is. i think everybody has different opinions on it. i like doing a loop, and two twisted ties on the end, but i also like to do a braid on both sides. hope this helped!
