for the base strings, say there are 8, do you need to cut 8 base strings of the same length?

yes that’s the case! I would recommend a couple inches added for ties and then the length of the bracelet! 10 rows usually = 1 inch for me!

So how long in inches should my base string be if I need 8. Sorry, I have never done an Alpha

It depends which bracelet it is , and how long you want to make it. Usually base strings do not need to be very long, like in normal patterns.

yeah that makes sense! since it’s 36 rows, to make a full bracelet you’d probably want to do it twice or 1 and a half times so I’d suggest making your base strings about 12ish inches to be safe but measure you wrist and add some inches for ties

sorry if that’s confusing but it’s better to be safer than sorry, so you can always add a couple

also one more question, can you just knot the top of the base strings to get started?

the easiest way for me is to tie a knot and use your knotting string to make a shaped start, because if you tie a knot and start from there it could get weird! alex's innovations has a great tutorial for shaped starts with alphas, if you want to check it out. but since your bracelet is only 8 strings you might be okay with just starting from a knot!
