I keep watching videos from people like masha knots but i dont know how to read patterns still. i was taught from a friend how to do the cheveron and it looks the same as the pattern but when masha does it she does it completely differently. #38769 was the one i was trying to do right now

the way you explained it sounds like you were trying to learn how to segment knot (which is hard to do when you’re a beginner) so i would try doing the row-by-row method. i would watch katrinaosity’s video on youtube. she explains how to do row-by-row well. hope this helps!

i would suggest continuing to watch bracelet tutorials by people like masha knots, alex’s innovations, kinsey b, etc. watching their pattern tutorials and most importantly following along will really help you get a feel for how the knots interact with each other, allowing you to understand how to read patterns through both row by row knotting and segment knotting. i’m not sure whether you were trying to make this patten row by row or by segment knotting, same thing with the chevron though i am assuming your friend taught you how to segment knot the chevron (forward knots left to right, backward knots right to left, any knot in the middle). i hope that helps and feel free to message me if you’re still confused!

Based on you saying that when your friend taught you how to do the chevron it looked different than when MashaKnots did it I have two assumptions- either your friend knotted row by row (it's easiest especially if you are a beginner because you can just read the pattern like you'd read a book (row by row, from left to right) and you also don't really need to understand how patterns work. That's a really valid method.) - or you might be making your knots differently. Some people make their knots in a way that they look like what the backside of a bracelet looks like. I don't know if that's the case for you but if you do you can still follow patterns and tutorials but just use your knot types instead. What others have mentioned is segment knotting. That is what MashaKnots does in her videos. Usually I say if you have done the candystripe #1 or chevron #2 you most likely have already segment knotted but that might not be the case for you. Basically what you do when segment knotting instead of going row by row you knot in diagonals as often as possible. The advantage of that is that you can knot a lot faster especially with patterns like the candystripe or chevron. A disadvantage is that it can be confusing because you need to understand the structure of a pattern. In the end if you knot row by row or in segments is personal preference. Both ways are completely valid and just because MashaKnots knots in segments you don't have to. |
