if youre not using the base strings to tie any knots, you can use any color string you want

yes you can! you will only see the base strings in the ties, so you can use any colors you want. i usually use the same color background and base strings, but you can do whatever you want!

typically, you only tie a leading string onto the base strings but in the case of a 2 color alpha (like a word bracelet) you can use the base strings to tie the contrasting knots but it can cause some weird tension issues so i reccomend only using the leading strings for knots
