Hi everyone, I made my first ever pattern yesterday, and it was pretty random, but still took me a while. So I have some questions about designing patterns...

1. How long does it usually take to make a normal pattern?
2. How long does it usually take to make an alpha pattern?
3. On normal patterns, how do you design a shape onto it, like how do you make an intentional pattern?
4. When making alpha patterns, what are the dashes for (does it mean the base color)?

Thanks guyssssssssssss

How long it takes to create a pattern usually depends on size and complexity. For me I also count the time I need to come up with ideas. Sometimes I take a long time until I have an idea, sometimes it comes really fast.

Normal patterns:

For normal patterns I usually make a sketch on graph paper how the pattern should look because it helps me to imagine how the strings need to move to create a certain shape. For simpler patterns I try to write them in the generator almost instantly, for more complex ones I'll figure the complete pattern out on paper first.

Here is a tutorial on how to design normal patterns https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/34_designing-normal-patterns/

Once you have more experience and a better feeling of how normal patterns work you'll be able to make more complex patterns.

Depending on which knot you make the strings move differently and the knots have different colours. If you want the knot to have the colour on the left side you need to do a f or fb knot. If you want the colour of the right string you need a b or bf knot. When doing a b or f knot the string continues moving in the same direction, when doing a bf or fb knot it switches direction. That's important to keep in mind because it helps you move the string in the direction you need it next.

Alpha patterns:

For alpha patterns I usually use a pixel art app in which I draw the design and then I use the alpha from picture mode to turn it into a pattern.

In an alpha pattern in the write alpha mode the dashes basically are colour a. In a normal pattern the first colour is a, in an alpha it's -.

@halokiwi Thank you so much for this, I've just looked at the tutorial and that helped a lot too. I probably should have thought about designing it first originally 😂.

@halokiwi Also, sorry if this is a really dumb question, but what is the generator?

The generator is where you design the patterns. Idk if that's the correct term but that's what I use to refer to it.

@moly your alpha pattern needs to be reviewed by a moderator before it is accepted to the site. you will receive a notification within 24 hours that will say whether a moderator accepted or declined your pattern

@moly moderators can decline patterns if they don't meet the standards a pattern on this page should meet. If you go to the pattern generator you'll find the declined pattern there and on top of it there will be a message why the pattern was declined. You can edit the pattern and resubmit it.

@aylad on your phone you click on your username, on your computer you hover over it. Click "create patterns" and then select if you want to create a normal or alpha pattern.
