I recently bought 4 sets of thread. First two were amazing. Super silky feel, doesn’t tangle or stick at all. Love it.
Other two are rougher. They tangle if they barely touch another thread.

The brands aren’t clearly marked. Is there another difference I should look for? I’m buying on amazon since ships are closed so I can’t touch the thread before I buy. Can someone explain so I know what to purchase??

Look at reviews first if there are any. Also, try and zoom in on any pictures that are of a single skein of string and sometimes you can tell if it is going to be silky.

I recommend looking at reviews as well. I know there are some sketchy Amazon brands so I kind of rely on the reviews if there are any.

Im personally prefer craft cord over embroidery floss because embroidery floss gets really tangled and annoying but make sure to look at the reviews

I was able to go into a past order of the best thread I have. The brand was unhelpful, but the word "mercerized" was used. I looked that up, and it's a process to make cottom more silky. So I am going to guess that any thread I would want would have that word in the description. I hope this information helps some of you out too. And thanks for the suggestion about comments on Amazon. I usually just shop by price and forget to read the comments. 😉

If you want threads that are not sticky you need to look for threads made of mercerized cotton. Mercerized threads are shinier, smoother/silkier, and take up color more easily than normal cotton so that means there are more color varieties. I don't know what threads you have access too, but off the top of my head DMC pearl cotton is a good choice. It also has a twist so the thread doesn't separate into strands. I also recommend using crochet thread like Aunt Lydia's thread you'll probably want weight 3. weight 5 or 8 may also be acceptable (the higher the number the smaller the thread.)

Keep in mind that mercerized cotton tends to be pricier, but for me the knotting process goes by faster because I don't have to untangle threads as much. but maybe that's just me.
