How do u know if the knots are backwards or forwards

If you're reading a pattern, the forward knots will have arrows that start in the upper left and go down to the lower right. The backward knots will have arrows that start in the upper right and go down to the lower left. Forward knots always go to the left, backward knots always go to the right. Hope that helps!
