Just be active on the site. Rate patterns, post in the forums/chat, submit photos, submit patterns and variations.

You can only make patterns and variations on the website, not the app. Go to the top menu bar and put your cursor over your avatar. There will be a drop down option 'Create patterns'. The quickest way to level up is to post photos and patterns, but smaller things like forum posts help too! 😊
