You can only make patterns on the site, not the app. Go to your avatar on the top menu bar, and there is a drop down option 'Create patterns'. Click on that and it will take you to the page to make alpha and normal patterns.

I actually just tried it but the site said “error the number of rows has to be even”. What does that mean?

you need to add another row then! if you look at any other pattern, the rows are even 🙂
