Hi. I’m not exactly new to bracelet making but I’m fairly new to reading patterns. I can work my way through both row-by-row knotting and basic segment knotting, but I still find that I make a lot of mistakes when reading patterns. I often duplicate knots, especially on the sides. My question is, am I just experiencing beginner mistakes or am I missing something all together? Thanks for the help.

I write what row I'm in, and if I don't have the pattern memorized I keep it pulled up

It's definitely a practice thing! When I do a new pattern the first repetition is a mess and I make mistakes but it gets better once you're more familiar with a specific pattern and reading patterns in general. If you print your pattern out you can make marks in it with a pencil and that will definitely help. |

when i just started out, i wrote what i did in a notebook or i would print the pattern out and check it line by line. if a pattern is tricky for me now, i keep track of what im doing in the notes app on my phone

Keep practicing and you’ll get better! Definitely keep track of what row you are on by writing in a notebook or putting it in your notes, it’ll definitely help!

The ends can definitely be tricky because the very end strings are only knotted every other row, so they basically get skipped on even-numbered lines. When segment knotting, I usually group just the strings for each particular section together and place the others way off to the side to keep from accidentally making knots onto the wrong section. Then I grab the next small group of strings and finish that section, and so on. Printing it out definitely helps, so you can outline the groups that make sense to you, or mark off the lines as you finish row by row. 🙂
