Tension Issues

Hello, I'm just starting out learning how to tie friendship bracelets. I made a few chevrons and had some weird tension issues, so I figured I would start by doing candy stripes to practice and get consistent. I got really nice tension after a lot of practice with forward knots and lots of practice with backwards knots. But when I do chevrons using segment knotting my left side is very neat and tidy, but my right side is weird. I think I'm too loose on the other side because there are string floats between each knot. How can I practice to make my tension more consistent between the knots? should I keep making chevrons until it starts to turn out?

If it helps to know, I do forward knots with my right hand, and backward knots with my left hand.

Any insight is appreciated!

Try making a candy stripe that is backward( i mean make it with backward knots )like my Harry Potter candy stripe . That way you can pacticemaking only backwards knots

thank you at14, I'll make a few backward knot candy stripes and see if this helps the issue.

To make a knot tight it's important to make the first half of the knot tight. Pull it as close to the previous knots as possible before you make the second half of the knot. The second half secures the knot in place.

Practice is always good but I think even without much practice you can pay attention to these things and especially when you practise you should pay attention to this otherwise it might become a habit.

If you have a hard time because you're switching hands, maybe trying to knot both with the same hand would help with tension.
Like it was said before, making sure the first part of the knot is tight is as important as securing it, so when you make the knots on the right, make extra sure to pull to the left as to get the knot as close as possible to the previous one, if that makes any sense 🙂
