That depends on the lenght of the pattern. But if you doing a bracelet, you should messure the size of your wrist plus some extra for the ties. For keychains you can take less. If you doubling the string for a loop or anything, take twice the size a you would normally do.

First, ad as much as you want for the ties, then double that 'cause you will probably have one tie on either end, then add the length of how long you want your finished bracelet to be. Hope this helps!
