How long should I cut my strings when making a normal pattern?

I always cut my strings too long or too short and I am struggling to find a good length. Are there any suggestions?

The way I always do it, is by measuring my wingspan and adding an inch or two extra for ties. As I do loops for my bracelets mostly, I would double that.
At the end, most often then not, I have string left over. And this helps for Alpha's, or if I want to do rag-rug bracelets. 🙂

I do wrap around my wrist 10 times, although it may vary for your specific needs and how many strings the bracelet is, because the more strings thre is th more it will use.

Cut it so that you know it's too long. Measure how much you have left of your string in the end. Calculate how much you would have needed. It comes down to experience. Everyone knots differently. Find a measurement that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Another big factor is that how much string you will need also depends on the pattern. In some patterns you have to do lots of knots with one string while almost none with another. It's hard to calculate.

I measure my strings the width from one hand, across my chest, and to the other and then add a few inches for good measure. It also depends on how long you want the bracelet and how if some strings are used more than others. So adding more or taking off some string is mostly personal preference.

If you need two of the same color I would grab the string with one hand, then make it as long as your wingspan. If you only need one of that color, I would cut the length of your arm up to half your chest.

I think it is very dependent on number of strings.

My rule of thumb is that ~3ft (per string; if you are folding them in half to do a loop you need 6ft so each string is still 3ft) will make a 20 string bracelet with a loop and ties. If you have thicker wrists (mine are rather petite) add 4-5in, if you want to do ties at both ends then again, add 4-5in for ties. If you are making a loop I suggest that you add at least 5in (again per string you are going to use) to the end of the string you are going to use to do the Chinese staircase.

From that rule of thumb I then adjust according to the number of strings e.g., If I have 10 strings I only need about 1.5ft.

For me, it is useful to use a ruler, yard stick, or meter stick (you can also do this rule by 1m instead of 3ft since they are almost the same). For smaller bracelets I can eyeball it, but mostly I like to measure.

Hope this helps.
