How to make alpha patterns have a straighter edge and be less lumpy?

I love doing alpha patterns so much! Don't get me wrong my most recent one is much better than my first one but it's still not to my liking 🙁 I'm having trouble keeping it a consistent straight edge/size. I'm also struggling with the design being raised and like popping out of the background. Any tips or does it just get better with time?

From your description it seems like you are not using the the flat alpha technique. I recommend using it. In her video on the flat alpha technique, MashaKnots explains the flat alpha technique and also the straight edges technique for alphas. Both are very useful for keeping your alphas straight and flat.

It's also very important that all your leading strings have the same thickness.
