Thinner or thicker base strings?

I’ve heard some people using aunt Lydia’s size 10 thread (thin) or doubling embroidery floss. My question is, what is better? I’ve only ever used the same type of thread for leading and base strings and have avoided using different sized strings but am now hearing more people doing this.

Thicker or doubled base string will help you make the knots more square. When you use the same size leading and base string, the knots have a tendency to be higher than wide which leads to the design being elongated.
