I can knot normal f and b knots perfectly fine, but I always mess up with fb and bf knots. they end up wonky--too big, uneven, not straight. whenever I knot a pattern with the straight edges technique, it actually turns out less straight due to the fb/bf knots. any tips?

HII! I also often had this issue as a beginner due to not using the same tension for my backward and forward knots. Ensuring that your tension is the same for all your knots will probably help. For the straight-edge technique, It isn't necessary to do it. While it works best for some people, if you find your edges are straighter without it, go without it! Watching tutorials and making non-patterned alphas(just one colour over and over on a small number of base strings) can help me get used to the different types of knots and their placement. I'm sure you will improve with time, it just takes practice 🙂
