Why do my alpha knots slant / look like herringbone?

My alphas look like this:

/////
\\\\\
/////
\\\\\

I feel like they are supposed to look like this:

IIIII
IIIII
IIIII
IIIII

How can I make the stitches straight? I do not have this issue with regular patterns, and I have good tension/uniformity.

It’s completely normal for alphas to slant. That’s just what the knots do one alphas. In normals, you’re tying the knots more diagonally, so it’s straighter, but in alphas, you’re tying the knots horizontally, which makes them diagonal, if that make sense. Hope this helps! 🩵

Thank you! That makes sense. I was looking at others' bracelets and had not noticed the slant. I am making a wall hanging with worsted weight yarn. With the thicker yarn, it is much more pronounced than with embroidery floss.

I think that there is different ways to do alphas. I have seen pictures of them looking completely straight on some alpha patterns. Of course, I have no experience with these, but maybe look for a tutorial?

I have watched tons of tutorials. I am doing the flat alpha method, and the straight edge method. I was wondering if there is a certain way to adjust tension that makes the stitches slant less. I also think it is emphasized by the thickness of my yarn.
