hi! i wanna start making alphas but i wasnโt sure of how long to cut my string. how do you guys calculate alpha length?

Start with something small like a keychain, so you don't waste string. I know I need a little less than 2 mm per row. So say there's 15 rows, I'll need 3 cm for the pattern itself. But you need extra string to hold on to to make the knots. I'd recommend at least 5-7 cm. Then if you're doing a keychain, you'll probably make lark heads knots, so about 1 cm for the knots, and use a single strand of floss for 2 base strings. So that would give us 2*(3+7)+1=21 cm per string. Maybe add some extra in case you're afraid to run outOnce you've done a keychain, you can calculate how big your rows actually are and take it into account for next time ๐ |

Oh that's for base strings, for leading strings, some people keep them on the skein/bobbin, I personally don't like it, so I either cut about a meter if there's a lot of knots, or I count about 1 cm per knot, and then roughly estimate the length between the knots to add to that
