Does anyone have any tips for making alphas? I’ve been making bracelets for a few months now and decided to try an alpha design, but I wanted to make sure I did it right. I was thinking of doing pattern #174391 or something similar to it.

Totally not an expert, but i did a lot of research before starting and i'm learning a lot from the first few i'm making :
- don't use too much tension
- use something with a flat edge (ruler, credit card) after every row to even the knots. I even tighten them one by one with my nail, then use the card
- use thicker strings as base strings (not everyone does this, but it helped my alphas be less stretched)
- use the flat alpha technique (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YVFAX9sacw). I also do clean back but it's a bit of a pain
(btw the pattern number doesn't work)

if you don't have thicker strings to use for your base strings I would suggest doubling them up

@125489 I recommend checking out MashaKnots video on the flat alpha technique to learn how to tie alphas

does anyone know if weaving the strings into the back when you’re finished is actually necessary? i know mashaknots said she just cuts them off and never has a problem with it, but i saw some other people say they take a needle and weave the strings into the pattern.

@harper-156 no, weaving in the back is not necessary. Some people do it because they’re worried about the string coming undone, but usually it doesn’t come undone unless it’s the very last knot. If you ARE worried about the string coming undone and you don’t want to weave in the string, you can use a small bit of clear nail polish or some kind of fabric glue. I usually just cut them off though, and I haven’t had a problem with that either. Hope this helps! <333

how long should my string be with dimensions of 22 x 27

@sophowl567

The dimensions give you the amount of knots in the pattern. One number is the width in knots, the other is the length in knots.

If you've made an alpha before, you can measure how long a certain amount of rows is and use that to calculate how long the bracelet will be. The base strings always need to be the length of the bracelet plus some extra for ties.

You can just leave the leading strings on the skein and cut them in the end.
