I recommend watching MashaKnots video on segment-knotting. She explains very well how to read a pattern.

In the beginning, it can be helpful to take a screenshot of the pattern or print it and then draw the segments into the pattern.

If the different knot types confuse you, try thinking about them like that

An arrow from the LEFT to the RIGHT is a forward knot:
You take the LEFT string and make a knot towards the RIGHT.

An arrow from the RIGHT to the LEFT is a backwards knot.
You take the RIGHT string and make a knot towards the LEFT.

An arrow that switches direction also means that the knot switches direction.

An arrow staring on the LEFT going to the RIGHT and going back to the LEFT is a forward backward knot.
You take the LEFT string, tie the first half of the knot to the RIGHT and the second half of the knot to the LEFT.

An arrow staring on the RIGHT going to the LEFT and going back to the RIGHT is a backward forward knot.
You take the RIGHT string, tie the first half of the knot to the LEFT and the second half of the knot to the RIGHT.

You start at the top. If you don't want to watcha video, I recommend starting with a simple candy stripe or chevron #1 #2, just to familiarize yourself with the look of pattern. For the candy stripe you just do a full diagonal with color 1, then color 2 etc. For the chevron it's similar but only going up to the middle. Once you understand these well, you can move to more complex patterns

And sorry, I thought you didn't know how to recognise the different knots in the pattern.
