Knot tying and reading patterns

Hi! I a bit of a beginner to reading patterns, but I can make a chevron bracelet no problem. Anyways, I'm trying to follow a more complicated pattern and I understand what the arrows mean in which way the knot is tied. My question is do you have to read every row from left to right? Or can you start on the end side of each row and work your way to the middle, like a chevron? I find that when I am trying to make the bracelet from left to right on each row, I end up with weird crossovers and holes/gaps that shouldn't be there! Thank you : )
