The answer to that really depends on the string that you are using, as different types of thread have different properties that interact with the other strings in many different ways. The best way for you to find the perfect base string for you is to experiment with what you have. Pick a small alpha pattern (can also just be a smooth square), and make it using different types of strings for the base. Start with strings that are the same as what you use for the leading thread, and see how it turns out. If the knots end up too long for your liking, pick a thicker thread, or double over the thread you have been using. I have heard of people using thin cotton yarn as base strings, so that's a type you can experiment with. Perle cotton thread is also a popular choice, as it comes in longer skeins, but it's quite thin so it definitely needs to be doubled or even tripled, depending on your leading thread. Try out different things, and don't worry too much about the results. This is all about finding what works best for you, with the things you can find. Good luck! I hope you have fun! |

You can use literally any strings for base strings, just make sure that all of them are the same thickness. I personally use crochet thread for base strings and embroidery floss for the leading strings. I think is more of a personal preference.

I normally just use craft string or mini yarn as base strings since I have so many of it, anything that’s similar to leading string and isn’t too fragile should work. And if you’re wondering about the length of how long they should be I usually make mine about 40cm long each so I have space to make twist ties at the ends and place on my wrist to get an idea of where to start. Also it’s totally fine to make mistakes because you learn as you make them.
