Hello everybody,

as I started knotting with a alpha keychain (butterfly) I would now love to make a bookmark out of this pattern: https://www.braceletbook.com/patterns/normal/7954/
Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZen3hlixaA

So I have some questions before I start. As it is a bookmark, I won't need the teardrop loop at the beginning. I considered to make the beginning like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ckp90Gdi_Y&list=PLxUc9zlQQ17d6-D6zPuit2uFS-vf8BMxr&index=31&t=646s
But does this work because my pattern goes like a V and the pattern in this video is like \
Do you have other ideas?

And the next question is: Why does Masha start with the first fully colored (in one color) row and not with each different colored string like in the "first row" shown in the pattern? In both videos above she does is like this. To me it seems easier, yes. But is there any other reason for it? I just have not worked with a normal pattern yet and wonder where to start.

I am confused 🤔

Thanks for your help!

Another idea would be just to start the bookmark like here at aboud 2:30: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rZmgA9uFNg&list=PLxUc9zlQQ17d6-D6zPuit2uFS-vf8BMxr&index=25
and tie the strings together at the end... 🤔

In Mashas video she starts with all the strings in rainbow color order. In the pattern the order is different. When I look at the pattern, I think I have to start with the two strings in the middle. But the beginning of Mashas version looks a lot nicer when the strings are in rainbow color order at the very beginning. And so she starts with the last color of her rainbow and makes her first V.
Is this only possible with the loop? My problem is that I don't need the loop for a bookmark.

Which possibilities do I have?
Follow the original pattern and start where? In the middle with magenta strings K+K, I+J, J+K, K+K and do nothing at the beginning, just use a tape and tie them together at the end? And I hope to come to the step where I can just follow the tutorial, because this looks a lot easier. 😂

Another possibility for people who know what they do (not me 😂): use a tape, then follow the tutorial from the beginning without that loop and at the end turn it around and make a triangle at the start. 🙈

The easiest way to link a pattern is this: #7954
This way website users can click directly on it.

I think a teardrop loop would still be a nice start, even though you don't really need the loop. The pattern has a v-shape, so a v-shape as the beginning or at least something symmetrical would look nicest.

You can also do a slanted start like you suggest. You can do any type of possible start for any normal pattern. Which start you pick is basically just preference. Most people prefer a start that matches the appearance of the pattern.

I think the reason she starts with fully coloured rows is again just preference. Personally I also prefer fully coloured rows as a start, but you can also do multi colour rows.

The more strings you have in a pattern, the messier it gets, if you don't do some kind of shaped start. If you have lots of strings in a pattern, the bracelet will bunch up, if you just tie those together in the beginning or end.

My answer in short:
- shaped starts (starts where you don't start in a horizontal line at the beginning of the pattern) are a good way to start a bracelet
- the more strings you have in a pattern, the messier it gets, if you don't
- you can do any shaped start for any normal pattern, but starts that follow the shape of the pattern mostly look best

And one more thing: there is no wrong way to make friendship bracelets. There are lots of choices you can make solely based on your preferences. My recommendation for you would be to just try it out. Then you can discover your own preferences.

I think I overestimated your knowledge of shaped starts when I started reading. I'm going to recommend some videos/tutorials to you later, so you can get a better overview.

I'm not sure btw, if the newbies section is really the section you should post to. Your questions aren't really beginner questions.

@halokiwi: Thank you for your answer!

I habe been watching a lot of videos lately, especially about ending bracelets. There are not soooo many different starts and my problem was that sometimes you can't do both at the end and the start.

Hm, I'm still not sure. A teardrop loop in a bookmark does not make any sense. But yes, the start should be similar to the V-shape as this is the pattern.

And I am not sure about the length. I have 12 (not 11) colors now, this will be 24 strings. And I think a bookmark will be longer than a bracelet because you don't tie it together (I have small hands...). So I think that I will rather need 1,50 m instead of 1 m. I guess it will be 3 cm wide.

You know this feeling when there comes the postman, brings to you your first knotting strings and you sit there and out of 150 colours you collect together your favourite rainbow colours and you are soooo excited and you go just ... woooowwww ... 😄 😍 🎉

There might be more methods than you think there are. This video gives a good overview:
https://youtu.be/N6-KQDLeKik?si=k8pARzPd-Kei5DIP

If you don't want to do a loop at the start, you can still make a v-shaped start without the loop. In this case you'd have two ties in the beginning.

A regular triangle start would probably also look really nice, even if the shape is not in the pattern. The symmetry of the triangle would match the symmetry of the pattern.

What you could also do is starting the pattern upside-down, so you knot in a ^-shape instead. When you get towards the middle of the desired length, you reverse the pattern, so that you have a diamond in the center and continue with a v-shape. I'm not sure, if this would be doable for you or not.

I just got another idea. Is there any tutorial for that?
I like symmetry...so I prefer a start that is similar to the ending. So if I don't tie a loop, but leave the strings long enough (about 15 cm) and instead of the lila knots in the tutorial I knot around only the rainbow colours to the right and the left, then cut through the loop (which is actually no loop, only strings) and then tie them together like in the end (twisted ties). So i can start the pattern like Masha does with the V-shape and have no loop.

Haha, I wrote my post but did not send it. 😂 😇

"If you don't want to do a loop at the start, you can still make a v-shaped start without the loop. In this case you'd have two ties in the beginning."
This was my thought...exactly.

@halokiwi:

Oh my god...how will I get a bookmark out of 24 strings? 😂 😂 😂

So, I started like this now...the next step would be in rainbow colour order backward knots on the left and forward knots on the right starting with the red string. And then just following the tutorial.
But I am still not sure what looks good at the start. I only know that I don't want a loop. A triangle out of several colors and then invert the pattern, this is too difficult for now. 🙈

You can cut the ''loop'' right away, if you don't want a loop. You can start with individual strings for each side from the start, if you don't want a loop to be there anyways. So 24 strings that are half the length instead of 12 long strings that are folded in half.

You put the strings in rainbow order from the edges to the middle. You knot a chevron to the middle using f knots on the left and b knots on the right. Then you knot a chevron to the middle using fb knots on the left and bf knots on the right. This will work no matter, if you use 24 or 22 strings.

If you don't know which start to do yet, just don't do a shaped start yet and leave the strings in the beginning a little longer. You can finish the start once you are done with the rest of the bracelet.

@halokiwi

You are right, of course. I could have cutted them all. I didn't because indeed I don't know yet what to do.

If I do my first row as a chevron (this would actually be the same as in the video tutorial of Masha Knots, I think?) and just tape the strings down in the right order, can I do this shaped start without that loop (these two twisted ties and knot the strings all together like in the teardrop loop) when all is finished?
I want to do something nice with this start (frist end...above end, lol however), but there are things that are only possible at the beginning that I can't do when the bracelet/bookmark is finished.

Yes, you can do the shaped start after you finished the bracelet 🙂

Ok, thanks. I will come back in a while.
Sorry, I still can't get the full logic out of knotting 😇

I am now making this pattern again and this time I started with a teardrop loop.
Does anyone here have an idea how to end this bracelet with only one twisted tie in the middle instead of two, because they go into different directions and I somehow don't like that (for a bookmark).
I doubt that it's possible to bring all strings into the middle?

Of course you can bring all the strings to the middle. Just do a triangle end.

Here is a video on triangle ends in alphas:

Hm...this is not an alpha. I already did this with my alpha keychain. But it was a horizontal row and with this bookmark there is this V shape. This is what confuses me. And especially - how can I get a triangle end out of a V shape with all these colours so that the colours look good? 😭

Ah, you mean I should do as if this V was a horizontal row and the complete triangle would only have one color?
A triangle is a V shape...but I think I can't do this with a different color in each row? Or even following the original pattern?
