It depends really on the pattern, like for example there's a possibility you will lose more of one colour than another. For Normal patterns I tend to measure my string to a wingspan, if I am folding the string in half (for making a loop) I will double it. I always end up with string left over,so I can re-use them. 🙂

It depends on the pattern, but if I'm not folding it over I usually do two and a half feet, or three feet.

It depends on the pattern, but I also cut them on the long side, as the scraps can be used in countless different alphas!
