i was looking at maybe participating in a challenge but wasn't sure if i have to ask to join? and which pattern i'd be using? i saw people doing this but didn't know if it was like necessary or not. and is there any other etiquette i should be aware of? thanks!

Every challenge is different. Most of the users here have either been in multiple or hosted multiple challenges so far. For your first challenge I would suggest doing one of the Official ones (Official September Bi-Weekly or the Official Monthly: September) just so you know what you're doing and the mods are great at laying out the rules of a challenge.
As far as telling which pattern you're going to do, some challenges allow you to pick a pattern, allow you to pick a pattern with a set of rules (for example an ocean challenge that is currently going on has rules, that you can only choose a normal, sea or ocean themed pattern) or the person hosting picks the pattern for you (Like in a "I pick your to-dos" challenge)
There are also challenges where there are sign-ups first and then, once enough people have joined, the first round of that challenge starts. And there are challenges where you're partnered with another person (or two) and you would compete against each other or other groups. And you could have to do the same pattern or pick a pattern.
I'm sorry if this is a lot but there is A LOT as far as challenges go. I just learned how challenges work by reading the rules of some, picking a couple I liked best (for example, I'm in a lot of fall/autumn challenges currently because I'm really excited for fall) and diving in headfirst.
It all comes from physical experience so I would suggest going for it right away!
I hope this helped! 😊

It depends on the kind of challenge. There are two kinds of challenges:

Official challenges:
- They are created by us mods.
- They always have the same rules. Those are explained in the beginning of the challenge.
- You don't have to ask to join.
- You can pick from a list of patterns that were selected for the challenge.
- You earn rewards (points on your profile) for each item you post a photo of.

User-created challenges:
- They can be created by any user.
- The user hosting the challenge makes the rules. The rules can be different from challenge to challenge. They should be explained in the beginning of the challenge, but if they aren't or you don't fully understand them, you can always ask.
- Sometimes you have to ask to join. Sometimes you don't have to ask to join. This depends on the rules the challenge.
- Sometimes there is a list of patterns you can pick from. Sometimes there is a theme for the challenge and you can pick the pattern yourself. Sometimes you then have to ask, if the pattern is alright. Sometimes the host of the challenge will pick one specific pattern for you. It depends on the rules of the challenge.
- There might be prizes for winning or participating. These are determined by the user hosting the challenge. You can't earn rewards in user-created challenges.
