How do you determine the length of a dowel that you need for a wall hanging?

For a certain amount of base strings, the wallhanging will have a certain width. You can measure how wide a certain amount of base strings is in an alpha you have already made (for example ten base strings) and use that to calculate how wide the amount of base strings in the pattern you want to make will be. ๐

@bushfan46, I like to attach all my strings to my dowel, and then knot the first row before I cut off the dowel. This way I know I won't be over estimating, or underestimating how much dowel I need!
