when looking for a pattern you can put in the difficulty level you want and you can just keep going up by one level once you feel comfortable. ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜Š

I don't know how others do it, but when I first started out making friendship bracelets years ago, I went by string numbers. I was almost always doing Alpha's though, so I started off making bracelets with 12 base strings, and when I felt confident with 12, I went up top 14, 16, etc. With Alpha's I also went by how many colours were in the bracelet; so my very first Alpha was 12 base strings with 2 colours, and I introduced more colours accordingly.
I've only recently started (in the last 3 months or so) to do Normal patterns on a regular basis, and I did the same process. I started off with 12 strings, and I'm working my way up slowly as Normal patterns are what I struggle with. The most I've done with Normal's so far is 18 strings. It didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, so I've gone back down to 16 strings as a maximum for now.
Maybe you could try that out (if that is what you are looking for) and see if it works for you, like it has for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

My advice is to compare patterns you want to do with patterns you have already done. For example if you've only done chevrons and candy stripes before I recommend patterns that are like these patterns but just a little bit different.

If a pattern only has b and f knots and no bf and fb knots that can also make it easier for some. That really depends on which knots you're comfortable doing.

The size of the pattern also plays a factor in how difficult it is to create a certain pattern. Of course it's more difficult if the pattern has more strings because you get confused more easily but it also gets harder if the pattern has many rows.

There's not really a rule that works for everyone. Just look at the pattern and think about how you would do it. If it confuses you or you're frustrated by it maybe you're not ready for that specific pattern.
