You should use a wingspan length for your normal patterns. A wingspan is form the tip of your fingers on one hand to the tip of your fingers on the other hand when your arms are completely straight out to the side of you. For your alpha I would say maybe a foot or so for base strings and as long as your want for your knitting strings cause you can always replace them. Hope this helps

I usually do about half of my wingspan.
Extra string has quite a few usages. You can use it as background strings in alphas or making rag-rugs.

to clarify the previous 2 answers, use a wingspan if you're folding the string over to make a loop, and half a wingspan if you're not making a loop aka you're doing ties on both ends

If you are using the same string length for all strings, you will waste strings in most patterns, because in most patterns all strings aren't used equally. In patterns like #1 or #2, where all strings are used equally, I recommend about 90cm per string. In other patterns, where the strings aren't used equally, use more for the strings that make more knots of their own colour and less for the strings that make less knots of their colour.

Do you need longer strings if there are more strings involved? Does that make sense lol?

@kpoggie like it makes sense but you don't really need much longer strings
