How do you start normal patterns on a keychain?

Do you just do what you do for alphas (larks head or cow hitch I think it's called) or is there something else that you do? Also, what do you do when there are 2 color next to each other and you have to tie the knot (if that makes sense)?

Basically that's what you doIf you just need one string of a colour, you can split the string so it has only three strands instead of six, attach it using the larks head knot and use both halves as one string. |
