I usually use Dmc embroidery floss, they’re probably the best and most popularly used type of thread 🧵 hope this helps 😄

If you plan to use yarn, look out for cotton yarn, or blended acrylics that are less stretchy. I’d suggest avoiding material with lots of stretch, like wool, as they can appear even lumpier/wonkier in works by knotters who have not yet established good tension in their knotting.
