Dimensions are the knots per row x how many rows there are.

Are you trying to make a normal or an alpha pattern?

In normal patterns, dimensions don't really have an effect on string length needed, if you are making a bracelet. You'll need around 90cm per string. If a string makes especially many knots of its own colour, you need more. If a string makes especially little knots of its own colour, you need more. If you are making something shorter than a bracelet for example a keychain, you'll need less string in general. If you make something longer like shoe laces, you'll need more string in general.

In alphas, you have two different string types: base strings and leading strings. The base strings are the only ones you can really calculate. They need to be the length of the bracelet plus the length of the ties and some extra for the loop, if you are making a loop. If you make something other than a bracelet, you can use the amount of rows in a pattern to calculate how long it will be. For that you just measure a certain amount of rows in an alpha you have already made and use that to calculate. You can't really calculate how much you'll need per leading string. Most people just work with full skeins and cut the string in the end.

I hope that answers your question and did not confuse you as a newbie 🙂
