If a pattern calls for 13 strings, does that mean I need to add two additional strings to make the flat ends of each side?

i’m having a bit of trouble understanding ur question so imma take a guess and feel free to lmk if there’s a better way i might be able to help. i’m gonna guess ur making an alpha and want to use the straight edge technique? for the straight edge technique, an odd number of strings isn’t a problem so u don’t need to add additional strings

Sorry about that! But yes, that helps!! Is there ever a time that you need to add extra strings to the number it says so that you can have straight edges?

In normal patterns you have to add extra strings at the edges most of the time, but not always.

I have written a tutorial in which I explain how to do the straight edges technique for normals and alphas:
https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/101_the-straight-edges-technique/

(The amount of base strings in an alpha is one string less than the amount of strings given btw. The amount of strings given is always the amount of base strings plus one extra for the leading string.)
