I'm not really a newbie when it comes to tying, but I'm certainly a newbie when it comes to terminology. I keep seeing the term "1-2 pattern" in pattern comments and have no idea what it means.

It means that the pattern only uses forward-backward knots and backward-forward knots. No forward knots or just backward knots.

What KrazyKnots said. I think it's called that because you usually have to go row by row (if you don't want to confuse yourself at least). So if you imagine your strings in the following order: blue red yellow blue red yellow Then in the first row, you would do a knot between: blue and red yellow and blue red and yellow And then in the second row, you put the outer-most strings aside and make the following knots: red and yellow blue and red And the third row will be the same as the first, and the fourth the same as the second and so on. That means that the strings always have the same "partners" in knots - the string that is right and the string that is left of them (since they never change position). If you call the pairs you have in even rows "pair 1" and the pair you have in odd rows "pair 2", then you always do a row of 1-knots and then a row of 2-knots. At least I think that's why it's called 1212-pattern.... (Notice how the strings always stay in the same order - that's because you only do backward-forward and forward-backward knots, both of which preserve the order of the strings. That in turn makes it easier to create patterns for them, because you don't have to think about where a certain colour will be three rows down. But I think the popular opinion is that they're also a pain to knot because segment-knotting is impossible.) And I have an example of the same pattern as 1212-pattern and as a... "normal?" (or rather: "not-1212") pattern: 1212: #136445 normal: #148511 It's the same pattern with the same colours and the same number of knots and everything. The only thing that is different, is that the 1212-pattern only has forward-backward and backward-forward knots. |
