Embroidery floss works well, although if you want it to be larger, yarn works too.

Embroidery floss all the way! There are certain types of yarn that can also work for friendship bracelets but I recommend embroidery floss

You can use embroidery floss or yarn. Just make sure you stick to one medium. I personally use embroidery floss. It is pretty easy to find. Majority of craft stores have a section for it, and Walmart has some as well. I don’t really use DMC that much because it is quite expensive but you can get different brands (j&p coats, loops and threads, random packs from Amazon lol) that aren’t as expensive and work just the same.
