I'm wondering about shaped bracelets as when I do them I get the 'base' strings hanging down how do I avoid that? This is for normals btw!

You just make the knots at the edges around all the loose strings. That applies to both alphas and normals.

There are some good videos on the shaped frog bracelet and the shaped evil eye bracelet on YouTube.

Shaped bracelets (both alphas and normals) basically work like triangle ends. It's the same technique.
