how do i attact the strings at the top of a noraml pattern wallhanging? do i just tie them on???? whats the techniqe??????

I assume you don't always have two strings of the same colour next to each other in your pattern. In this case you can just split your string (use 3 strands instead of 6 strands per string), cut your strings double the length you would need and then tie them to the dowel using larks head knots. Use both halves of that string as one string.
