for those with some experience making shaped patterns. i am designing one of my own however i have not made one before. is the maximum number of base strings that you can jump just one or are you able to push it to two (or even more) strings? 🙂

I'm only aware of techniques to allow you to skip one. I'd be curious to know how to skip more. Some users have posted patterns in which this is the case, but I'm unsure, if these designs are possible or if they come from a lack of knowledge. I've asked from time to time but haven't really gotten a reply so far.

I commented on a few patterns now to see, if I can find an answer.

@pasteltrin has knotted pattern #132552 where there is a step of two base strings. They knotted it the same way they usually knot shaped alphas. They agree that this would probably not be very doable with bigger steps.

thank you @halokiwi 🙂 i had guessed that the technique was the same but it was helpful to see an example of what this looks like when completed. it would be so nice if there was a way to jump more than one string without making the edges look so soft. nonetheless i appreciate your help, thank you so much!

I've also gotten replies from @MochiKitty and @Math_Rock who have done it with 3 and with 4 knots. Both seem to still work.

I think to figure out what the limit is one would have to experiment. Maybe I'm going to do this later.

I'd also love to do sharp edges, so I'd be really interested in alternative techniques too.

I would recommend only keeping it to 3 strings. If you pull too many strings apart you may form holes and it might be harder to close up those strings when reaching a certain portion of the bracelet. You could try splitting the strings gradually on certain patterns instead of all at once, though! 👍

@halokiwi i had the idea to use fine wire within the extended rows to help them to keep their shape, i’m thinking of using the wire from within those plastic ties by stripping back the plastic. if i have any success with it i will let you know 🙂

@halokiwi i was recently made aware of this tutorial:

https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/134_make-patches-applicators-with-alphas/

if creating sharper shaped patterns is something that you'd like to try, i think that you could use a similar technique (adding the expanding knots on a separate string rather than a base string and sewing/glueing the ends to the back of the bracelet) to achieve the effect and this could hypothetically be done without limits 🙂

i just thought that it was cool 😄
