what are the different ranks and what can you do

Those are awards! You get them by submitting a photo for official challenges (labeled as "official" in the challenges thread). They don't really do anything, they're just there to show people how many challenges you've completed.

At like the first level (beginner) you can’t do that much but you can still do some things. The more you’re active the higher you rank up. I’m pretty sure there’s about 5 levels. After ranking up once it’s more just how many patterns you can submit a day I think. Not 100% sure tho.

When you rank up, you don’t really get any special perks or rewards besides having it displayed with your user. The best way to rank up is to be active on the site by making patterns, posting photos, commenting on the forum, making variations, etc. The only other benefit of ranking up I can think of is being able to post more patterns and variations per day, but I am not sure if this is true or not so don’t take it for certain.
