I'm working on my first alpha and it's a 40x40 but its coming out longer than it is wider and I'm just wondering if that's normal or not?

Yes it's completely normal and alot of bracelet makers, including myself, experience this. It's due to the actual shape of alpha knots beeing slightly longer than they are wide- sometimes it can help to try knotting with a looser tension as it usually means that your knots will have a bit of a more rounded shape.

But I definitely wouldn't recommend changing your tension halfway through a piece, only try this out if you are starting a new alpha (:
