It sounds pretty dumb, but honestly it all comes down to practice. Everyone's first few alpha's look "deformed" as you put it. There are some tips though that may help; make sure you have the same tension throughout, make sure you don't pull the knots too tight, and make sure the first knot is sitting as you would like it to before doing the second and securing it. Also, pushing the rows up with your finger every and now and again also helps. What I also tend to do, that works for me is, I make sure to pull the background string looser than the pattern string(s). Hope this helps in some way. 🙂
