I assume that longer threads are required for thicker bracelets, but how exactly do I figure out how long the thread should be? Trial and error?

I usually make my string a little longer than my wingspan to start with. If it’s a thicker bracelet then yeah, you definitely need longer string. And if you ever cut string too short there are some tutorials on how to replace it. Hope this helps!

I always cut my strings about 90cm long (if I don't fold them in half).

The width of a bracelet has no influence on the length needed. What matters is how many knots you do with a certain string. If there is a string that you only or mostly make knots with and never or rarely knot onto, it needs to be longer. If you only or mostly knot onto that string, it needs to be shorter.

when i have to fold mine in half i do my arm span + a bit more for the loop knots at the beginning, usually i end up with a good amount at the end which is perfect for me to braid, tie and cut the excess off

When I cut my string I cut it a little longer than my wingspan if I am folding it in half and 10cm longer than my arms length if I'm not folding it.
