where to bulk buy thread for base strings (cheap and uk)

i want to start alphas but i dont know what string to use as base strings. i dont know how much i would need to cut of the string and dont want to waste coloured strings, so where can i buy eg. a large skein of just plain white thread for base strings that is cheap but decent quality? ( UK ONLY)thanks |

I would recommend buying dmc petra thread as it comes in an 100g ball and is usually around £6 (depending on where you buy it) which is fantastic value when you compare it to buying individual skeins.There are three different sizes/ thicknesses that you can get it in- I've found that size 5 is the most similar to regular embroidery floss but if you like working with base strings that are thicker than your leadings strings you could always try it in size 3. I got mine off of lovecrafts but they don't seem to have it in white any more so you should try doing some research and seeing where you can find it for the cheapest- many people sell it on amazon, etsy, etc.. |

You can get stag embroidery floss off of Amazon, not very cheap but still good value. I have had the pack for about a year and basically only make alphas, I haven’t even used half of it! The skeins are so large and good quality. Just a heads up though, it’s 1 size thinner than DMC threads which can sometimes be tricky if I’m using the colour in the pattern (not as base strings)
