When you are knotting say two white strings can you do any type of knot? I prefer doing forwards knots so if it says do a backward knot can I just do a forward knot?

Yes, that is correct. You can make any knot you like for a knot between two strings of the same colour.

Yes, this is because depending on which knot you make, the string is directed in a different direction. However, when the strings are the same colour, it doesn't matter which way either goes. 😊

Normally it doesn't matter, only be careful if you make a pattern that uses the "backside" as finished bracelet.
I once made one with only black and the backside hat some "knotpattern". I don't know how to explain this in english 🙈
