for base strings i typically guesstimate how long it’s gonna be based on the rows, or if i’m repeating the pattern, based on how long i want the bracelet to be. i have a 6” wrist, so i typically make the base strings 6”+8”-10”+8”-10”, so 22”-26”, with the 8”-10” on each end to count for the ties. you can easily get away with shorter, but i’d rather waste a bit of string, i use super cheap stuff, then have to restart cause i made the base strings too long. for your pattern, i’d say 6”-7” for the bracelet part, plus 9” per tie, if you braid the ends. i wouldn’t actually make the ties 9” long braids when done, but then you have room to tie a knot at the end easily. also it’s hard to find an answer somewhere just because everyone knots different, has different wrist sizes, and preferences with ties, and not all patterns are the same size. if you use the base strings to tie knots it’s even harder to come up with an accurate base string length. basically it’s dependent on the person knotting, not a one-size-fits-all thing so that’s why you won’t find a solid number somewhere. if you don’t make ties at the end, and it’s more like a bookmark, 12” would probably work, i’d go with 16” to be safe tho and i hate working with short base strings so much. hope i could help!

so Lets say I wanna make 5 inch ties on each side. A 70 row bracelet is about 6 inches long I believe. I add 6 plus 10 because I want 5 on each side so 10, which is 16. I then add 1 inch to be safe when making ties, so 17 inches for each base string. Hope this helps

What I do is to cut them the length that goes around my wrist + some more- the 'some more' will be the way you want to end and start your bracelet with: the length you need to have if you do twisted ties/ braids/ loops and more. It works for me because you don't knot anything with the base strings when knotting the bracelet, you knot on them. Hence, they won't get shorter than the initial length you had cut them to.
Hope that helps !🙂
