When switching colours in a normal pattern, the knots don't look right

I'm not sure how else to explain it. I do the proper knot (say, the forward-back) with green and white. Green is on top. No worries, all good there. But when the pattern calls for white on top, and I hold the threads properly, when I finish the knot the green is still more prominent... What am I doing wrong?

Sometimes if you pull a knot too hard it can kind of invert itself. I would try tugging on the green string when this happens and see if that fixes it.

sometimes in your green and white knot is too loose and the other is too tight, then the green might pull through. it happens to me all the time
